Motion capture and analysis of elite riders in Cadre Noir Saumur

The CavaleTIC project, funded by IFCE, aims at developping new monitoring technology to assist trainers in elite horse riders. In collaboration with UBS (Universite Bretagne Sud), the first step of the project consists in designing the specifications of such a technologica support. To this end, we carried-out in September experiments with elite riders of the Cadre Noir de Saumur, and with first year trainees to become professionnal coaches. A 10x10m square large scene has been set up to capture various dressage exercises with this population. Based on the motion capture data, we aim at identifying the relevant biomechanical variables that would help the trainer to evaluate and coach the trainees. We also aim at designing relevant real-time and off-line feedback that would help both trainees and coaches during their practice, for example using multisensory feedback.

Pierre Plantard will defend his PhD on the 8th of July, 2pm, Amphithéâtre E1, Université Rennes 2. The PhD is entitled “Objectivation et standardisation des évaluations ergonomiques des postes de travail à partir de données Kinect”.

Abstract:

Evaluation of potential risks of musculoskeletal disorders in real workstations is challenging as the environment is cluttered, which makes it difficult to correctly and accurately assess the pose of a worker. Most of the traditional motion capture systems cannot deal with these workplace constraints. Being marker-free and calibration-free, Microsoft Kinect is a promising device to assess these poses, but the validity of the delivered kinematic data under work conditions is still unknown. In this thesis we first propose an extensive validation of the Kinect system in an ergonomic assessment context with sub-optimal capture condition. As most of the large inaccuracies come from occlusions, we propose a new example-based method to correct unreliable poses delivered by the Kinect in such a situation. We introduced the Filtered Pose Graph structure to make the method select the most relevant candidates before combination. In an ergonomics context, we computed RULA scores and compared them to those computed from an optoelectronic mocap system. We also propose to challenge our method in real workplace environment and compared its performance to experts’ evaluation in the Faurecia company. Finally, we evaluated the relevance of the proposed method to estimate internal joint torques thanks to inverse dynamics, even if occlusions occur. Our method opens new perspectives to define new fatigue or solicitation indexes based on continuous measurement contrary to classical static images generally used in ergonomics. The computation time enables real-time feedback and interaction with the operator.

Looking for participants

We are looking for volunteers to perform an experiment on pedestrian behaviour. This experiment will be on the 30th and 31th of March in the gymnasium of M2S LAB, in ENS building, in KerLann Campus.
To analyze the motion of group of walkers, we want to gather 40 participants at the same time for each session. Reaching this number of participants is a challenging task but is a fundamental aspect for the success of the experiment. That is the reason why we ask you to help us.The task will be simply walking in the gymnasium with several conditions of group and path to follow. We plan a 2h session for each day.
If you are interested to participate to one (or 2) session of the experiment or if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact: anne-helene.olivier@univ-rennes2.fr

Thanks for your help

Job opportunity: Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Physical Interactions between individuals in locomotor and sports situations

Opportunity: A 1-year full-time post-doctoral position in INRIA, MimeTIC Team (https://www.irisa.fr/mimetic/) in Rennes, France. The position is funded by Inria with the help of la Région Bretagne. The gross monthly salary amounts to 2 128 euros.

Research Topics: The main topic of the post-doctoral fellow is the study of physical interactions between individuals. During interactions, each individual must act with respect to the motion of the other one. Especially, the question is to investigate how these interactions combine with respect to the type of the task to perform (avoid, intercept, meet, follow) and the role of each individual involved in the interaction (collaborative, competitive). Using an experimental approach (motion capture, virtual reality, …) at the individual scale, we propose to develop numerical models of interactions. The first objective is fundamental and aims at understanding the laws governing motor control during interactions. The second objective concerns the use of these numerical models of interaction. For simulation purpose, it will enable to propose more realistic pedestrian models, which are essential to design public area, for which security is assessed through simulation. In sports, realistic virtual human behavior in interaction tasks can be integrated to create next generation numerical training tools to increase performance.

Research Environment: The position is available in the MimeTIC team (https://www.irisa.fr/mimetic/) in partnership between Inria (http://www.inria.fr ) and M2S lab (http://m2slab.com/). The specificity of this team is to gather transdisciplinary scientific abilities with skills both in Biomechanics and Numerical Sciences. Moreover, the team has a unique research platform with two large immersive rooms and a gymnasium (30x20m) dedicated to motion capture and analysis.

Background Skills: The candidate should have a PhD in Biomechanics or in Computer Science. The candidate should have fluent writing and verbal communication skills in English as well as background in human experiments (experimental design, statistics, motion capture, virtual reality,….). Nevertheless, every application with interesting background will be considered.

Eligibility:
• Applicants should not be French national,
• or be French national but have stayed abroad France at least 12 months in the past 3 years.

Start Date: Review of applications will begin January 4th, 2016 with a start date as soon as possible (deadline for the venue : May, 1st 2015)

Applications: Send an email with cover letter, full CV, and contact info for 2 references to Anne-Hélène OLIVIER, PhD, MimeTIC Team, (INRIA), M2S Lab (University of Rennes 2), anne-helene.olivier@inria.fr
