Objective

Three European universities are organizing an IP (Intensive Programme) of two weeks (between the 8th of April and the 19th of April 2013) about physical activity with a particular focus on the specific and innovative tools used for its evaluation. This training will be explored in three directions: basic and exercise physiology, biomechanics and psychology.

The objective of this intensive programme is to give students theoretical knowledge about physical activity in terms of physiology, biomechanics and psychology but also and above all experimental skills on the technologies needed to apply this knowledge in domains such as sports performance and health. The learning outcomes are then:

  • Knowledge and understanding of physical activity: acquiring key theoretical knowledge underpinning the principles of physiology, biomechanics and psychology in physical activity; mastering technologies required to measure and analyse performance along with practical experience.
  • Subject specific skills: showing competence in a range of methods to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data; elicit high quality information and data from field sources.
  • Transferable skills: use of evidence in constructing logical arguments; designing and setting up methods for investigations.
The second objective is to make students aware of the types of careers in which they could use them - namely exercise training, management of pathologic populations and rehabilitative medicine. Based on the different backgrounds of the students, this intensive programme will provide an interesting complement to their existing knowledge. At the end of this IP, they will have acquired a unique multidisciplinary skill base for understanding and analysing physical activity in sport and health related contexts.

To ensure that the 25 selected students will master these technologies, three successive stages will be offered during the two weeks of the IP:

  1. fundamentals,
  2. practical experience using the technologies,
  3. applications to case studies in sports performance and health.

Who is concerned?

The Intensive Programme is dedicated to target groups of students from various domains such as:
  • Physiology,
  • Exercise Physiology,
  • Biomechanics,
  • Psychology,
  • Neurosciences,
  • Medical and Paramedical backgrounds.

Interest for students

The multidisciplinary approach of this programme is original and unique. The different learning activities are specifically elaborated for this programme and the multidisciplinary of the partners will allow the understanding of physical activity as a whole. The students will then have a multidisciplinary approach required by industrial companies as well as academic or medical institutes.

The 25 selected participants will acquire multidisciplinary skills, enlarging the range of job opportunities in public or private services for health promotion, health reeducation and readaptation, adapted physical activity, nutrition and food industry, car industry, movement simulation, biomedical industry, sport industry, clubs and federations of sports, etc. This IP is also the opportunity for them to create contacts with the network of each partner and especially the hosting one. For those who want to work on research, they will be part of an excellent community of researchers from different nationalities and disciplines.

This proposal fits the EU’s strategy since the new “Erasmus for All” programme includes a chapter on Sport. This proposition reveals a strong will of the European Commission to promote “Sport for All” and suggests a budget of 238 million euros to finance sport activities between 2014 and 2020. The students will then be in a domain that will grow in the next decades.

Finally a cultural and educational melting pot will create a small community for the students involved that will remain after the training. To bring a flavour of the region where the IP is hosted some cultural activities will be organized at the weekend.

How to apply?

The applicant must contact the local coordinator via the contact page.

What is an IP?

An Intensive Programme (IP) is a short programme of study which brings together students and teaching staff from higher education institutions of at least three participating countries.

An IP aims at:

  • Encouraging efficient and multinational teaching of specialist topics which might otherwise not be taught at all, or only in a very restricted number of higher education institutions;
  • Enabling students and teachers to work together in multinational groups and so benefit from special learning and teaching conditions not available in a single institution, and to gain new perspectives on the topic being studied;
  • Allowing members of the teaching staff to exchange views on teaching content and new curricula approaches and to test teaching methods in an international classroom environment.

The ERASMUS Intensive programme is supported by the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme
